IDEAS THAT PAY
This virtual event is designed to create a list of actionable science ideas that ILRI programs can do together. It seeks to celebrate the work that we do, and stimulate a set of new ideas that scientists believe would bring in new resources to the institute. These ideas will be generated through a 3 module process that will entail presentation, conversation and ideas generation. These ideas will be voted on, documented and presented to the ILRI Management Committee at the 21st and 22nd May meeting.
IDEAS THAT PAY involves understanding the science that we do, and building linkages to create scientific ventures that attract resources, effectively address livestock development issues, and build our reputation as a premier institute.
Module 1: Setting the Scene
Introduction by DG – Jimmy Smith
- Welcome
- Outline the Purpose of the event
- ======Improve awareness of ILRI science among staff======
- Identify opportunities for cross collaboration between programs, and between programs and regions
The workshop process – Stuart Worsley
- Explanation of the online format - How to engage - What to expect
Introduction into the Science Strategy – Iain Wright
- Where are we going - Why are we going there - How are we going to get there - How will be know when we have got there - What this means for each of us
Module 2: Program Presentation: Showing off our Stuff – Catching your eye!
There are 9 programs to be presented over the three days. Following completion of Module 1, these are scheduled as follow
For each program, there are two sets of presentations
- Program presentation covering the overall program
- Two Science presentations from with the program
These will be presented and discussed as follows
Program based audio power point presentation (max 3 minutes)
Program Leaders make a powerpoint presentation, with audio overlay. ( How to make an audio powerpoint)
- Why does ILRI need this programme? What are you trying to achieve (link to the ILRI strategy)?
Quick overview of your purpose What success looks like
- What does the programme do well and what are your weak areas?
What were some moments when you were proud and people noted your worth? When have you not done so well and wish you could do better?
- What does the programme need from other parts of ILRI?
What would a dream alliance look like?
On the basis of this presentation, participants are invited to comment, debate and otherwise converse to take the presented ideas forward. There are three main ways for this to happen, as follow
Comment Board:
Participants respond to the questions - Is this good science? (Important; robust; relevant; in demand) - Does it help us reach ILRI goals? (List these out) - Ideas to leverage work with other programs for a bigger effect?
Debate Rooms:
( Instructions for Debate Rooms)
In Nairobi and Addis Ababa, rooms will be set up at designated times for people to discuss programs together. Because of limited time, each program presentations will be allocated a 40 minute slot. (Note; the two science presentations within each program are also allotted 40 minutes each, giving a total of 2 hours for a program and its two presentations).
Rules of the game
Facilitators at physical debate rooms are responsible to document__ own findings and __post these in the comments page
Idea Generators
Some ideas will arise from within and beyond programs. Champions of these ideas will be invited to click on an “ideas form”, fill in a basic information page about that idea, and start a discussion page on that idea. This will be a self-generating blog page that collates comments and debate.
Science - audio power point presentations (max 3 minutes)
Introduction to 2 theme science presentations
(2 presentations within each of 9 theme sets BECA, PTVC, FFB, Vaccine, LSE, ASSP, LGI, FSZ, Animal Biosciences)
Science Presentation: Title
- Rationale for your research
This is what I am doing and why
- What is unique about it?
What do I really want you to understand about this?
- How could collaboration with others make it better?
What would I like from you?
Comment Board:
Participants respond to any of 5 questions - Is this good science? (Important; robust; relevant; in demand) - Does it help us reach ILRI goals? - Are there any Ideas to leverage work with other programs for a bigger effect? - What big assumptions are being made that we need to interrogate more?

How Do the Program and Science Presentations Hang Together?
The Diagram below shows the flow of each presentation within the program group
OFFER
Three offerings are made; one program presentation and two science presentations
QUESTION
Entitled “interrogate to act” participants are encouraged to interrogate the program and science presentations to explore how good the science is, how it enables us to reach what we are aiming for, how it connects with other work we are doing, and where opportunities are arising to create new work through collaboration across programs
IDEAS
From the questions and comments that arise, some ideas will emerge. Program Leaders are asked to be particularly active here to propose ideas, but this is a domain for all to engage in. If, on participating in questioning, or on reading questions, someone is struck by an idea for collaboration, they will be invited to open up an “ideas group”. To do this, they can click on a link to open a form in which they are asked to define a title, a tag line, their name as champion of the idea, and 50 to 75 words that succinctly define their idea. This form will become a page under which participants can offer comments and like. If the champion likes any comments, they can in real time edit their idea definition.
Documentation
For each program Module 2 event, the following documentation will happen;
What | When Delivered | Who |
Program Summary: A summation of all comments made in 1 page: Discussions & recommendations | BECA, PTVC – Monday 9.00pm Vaccine, LSE, ASSP – Tuesday 9.00pm LGI, FSZ, Animal Biosciences – Wed 9:00pm |

Module 3 – Tying it all together
This final module has two parts:
1) Collecting all the ideas into an idea pool, developing these together with our comments, and voting on those that make the most sense 2) These ideas will have implications for the way that we do things in ILRI. An open space blog will therefore be constructed for Thursday to review the implications for us.
The Ideas Pool
Nine summary presentations will be documented, making recommendations for new lines of work;
During Thursday, ideas in the idea pool will be open for people to like and comment on. On Friday morning, a tally of likes will be taken and the top 5 liked ideas will be selected for announcement at Friday morning coffee in Nairobi and Addis Ababa.
Each champion will present their idea based on the "idea" sheet. This will be at a standing FMC event (JVC in NBI)
Champions of all ideas will be asked to prepare short papers after the FMC event for presentation to ILRI management during IMC on 21/ 22 May.
The Implications
The ideas that come out of the programs will have implications on ILRI. Without going into individual specifics, participants will be asked to generally comment on what these might be. Implications may relate to the way we do our science, support our science, structure our institute, relate to stakeholders, manage our processes and much more.
This will be an open page where observations, concerns and recommendations can be defined through comments.
Best, Jens Peter
